Alec Baldwin cleared of Galina Hutchins murder charges
Alec Baldwin has been cleared of charges related to the death of cameraman Galina Hutchins on the set of his western Rust in New Mexico, his lawyers said. The edition told in more detail NBC News.
"We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and call for a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident," Baldwin's attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro said in a joint statement.
Galina Hutchins, 42, was killed by a live bullet fired from a handgun used by Baldwin in October 2021.
The actor was rehearsing for a gun scene when a gun went off, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Baldwin, who is the film's producer, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter of Rust cameraman Galina Hutchins. CNBC.
Although Baldwin's manslaughter case has been dropped, the actor is still facing other legal problems as a result of the accidental gunshot.
On the subject: Alec Baldwin did not appear at the first trial for the murder of Galina Hutchins
In early February, Hutchins' parents and sister sued Baldwin, the producers of The Rust and other members of the crew, accusing them of, among other things, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Hutchins' husband settled a separate lawsuit in 2022.
Baldwin's lawyers recently called the lawsuit "erroneous" and said the family "has no valid cause of action" against Baldwin, according to a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The family lives in Ukraine, and Baldwin's lawyers argued that they "physically, financially and emotionally distanced themselves from Galina for many years prior to her death."
Baldwin is also facing a lawsuit filed by three crew members who worked on the set of Rust, who claimed to have stood next to Baldwin when he fired. They said they received "injuries" from the gunshot and are now demanding compensation.
To date, only David Halls, the Rust assistant director who was responsible for the gun that killed Hutchins, has been prosecuted for Galina's death.
After refusing to contest charges of negligent handling of a lethal weapon, Halls was sentenced to six months of unsupervised probation, a $500 fine, and 24 hours of community service.
Halls' hearing was the first to be overseen by Special Prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis.
The investigation of the case is hampered by procedural difficulties, in particular, related to the appointment of a special prosecutor for the case.
