Female doctors' patients die less often than their male colleagues

Of the 458 female and 108 male patients, 318 (819%) and 142 (465%) were treated by female physicians, respectively. Thus, the mortality rate among female patients was 31,1% for female doctors and 97% for male doctors. This, according to scientists, is a clinically significant difference.

Among male patients, the difference is less significant - from 10,23% for male doctors to 10,15% if they are treated by women. The same pattern was found regarding re-hospitalizations.

How does the gender of the doctor affect the patient’s recovery?

So far, researchers know little about how treatment approaches differ between female and male doctors, and why patients benefit more when they see female doctors.

Based on the results of previous studies, scientists believe that male doctors may underestimate the intensity of pain and the severity of subjective sensations in female patients. Therefore, women do not receive full assistance. Researchers suggest that patients feel more comfortable seeing a female doctor. Women are more likely to tell female doctors sensitive information that is important for further evaluation and treatment.

The study authors note that the reasons for the gap in mortality rates require further study. Understanding the impact of physician gender on the treatment process will improve care for all patients.
