In Italy, found a cure for coronavirus: the results are impressive

Italy announced a positive result of treating coronavirus patients with the anti-rheumatoid arthritis drug Tocilizumab, produced by the pharmaceutical company Roche. Writes about this "Observer".

Hospitals began asking the Italian Medical Agency (AIFA) for approval of such a treatment plan. This was announced by Vincenzo Montesarchio, specialist in infectious diseases at the Cotugno Hospital in Naples.

According to him, over the weekend of March 14-15, four patients admitted to the Cotugno Hospital in Naples with a diagnosis of coronavirus were treated with the anti-arthritic drug Tocilizumab.

This was the result of a scientific experiment, the protocol of which was approved at the state level. In total, already 11 patients in Naples were treated improperly with the indicated drug, and the results are impressive.

“Four patients in intensive care are doing better. For the first patient, we are waiting for the intensivist's assessment before proceeding with his extubation. Three out of four patients treated with Tocilizumab have had excellent responses to the drug since Saturday. They did not undergo intensive care, but were hospitalized in quite serious condition,” Montesarchio said.

Other hospitals also reported positive effects from the drug. In medical institutions in Prato and Cosenza, several patients treated with Tocilizumab began to recover.

The experiment was continued in Puglia.

“Some patients infected with coronavirus have already begun to be administered the drug Tocilizumab, which in Naples allowed three patients admitted to intensive care to recover,” said the head of the regional task force, Pierluigi Lopalco.

In other regions, they also noticed a rapid improvement in the condition of patients after taking Tocilizumab. Roche has distributed about 600 units of the drug to different hospitals across the country.

“The idea was born because we use immunotherapy for tumors and treat some of the side effects with Tocilizumab. The mechanism underlying the COVID-19 disorder is very similar to that of cancer treatment. We also spoke with Chinese doctors who have already treated 21 patients with the drug, and 20 showed significant improvement,” explained Paolo Acierto, president of the Melanoma Foundation.

“The drug acts on the complication of this virus, that is, on the inflammation that COVID-19 creates. In short, it reduces the overactive immune system that causes respiratory failure,” he added.

The answer from AIFA as to whether the drug can be officially used as a cure for coronavirus has not yet been received, but doctors hope that Tocilizumab will be approved for mass use in the near future.
