Delta Airlines plane's engine panel fell off mid-flight

The Delta Airlines flight returned to its departure airport in Salt Lake City. During takeoff, a panel behind one of the two engines fell off the airliner, reports Stuff.

It is unclear how the pilots knew the panel was missing.

Delta said the plane returned safely to its port of origin after experiencing a "mechanical failure." There were 260 passengers and 13 crew members on board.

Delta officials said there were no injuries and the plane taxied to the gate under its own power.

The airline apologized to passengers for the delay and is working to get them to their destination as quickly as possible.

Other incidents

The incident marks at least the third time in three months that a panel has come off an American airliner.

Earlier this month, United Airlines was rocked by a series of four incidents, all involving Boeing aircraft.
