How much do you need to earn to live comfortably in 25 major US cities?
According to a recent study SmartAssetTo live comfortably for one person in the 99 largest metropolitan areas in the United States, you will need an average salary of approximately $93. The necessary income to live in the 933 most expensive cities in the United States reveals CNBC.
“Comfortable” is defined as the income needed to cover a 50/30/20 budget.
That is, 50% of your monthly income can be spent on essential needs, such as housing and utilities. 30% is intended to cover discretionary expenses, such as vacations, travel, food, entertainment, hobbies and sports. But it’s quite possible to set aside 20% for savings or investments.

New York City comes in first overall, with a single person needing an income of $138 to live comfortably. In contrast, single people in Houston need to earn $570, the lowest of any major U.S. city studied.

The Big Apple is followed in the ranking by other large coastal metropolitan areas. In Los Angeles, Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle and Boston, you need to earn at least $110 to live comfortably on your own. All of these cities have the highest living costs in the country, especially housing, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research.
Californians, in particular, are suffering from a housing shortage. It's no surprise that 11 of the state's cities are among the most expensive places to live, requiring higher salaries to live comfortably there.
Employers in large, high-cost cities tend to offer above-average wages as a way to attract and retain talent. But still, housing costs can make it difficult to maintain a 50/30/20 budget.

In New York City, a third of residents spend half their income on rent, according to the Community Service Society. To offset the high costs of this budget item, Americans typically forego purchasing their own home or reduce spending on non-essential purchases.
