Visa scandal: Russia suggests holding a meeting of the UN General Assembly not in the USA
Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Vershinin noted that Moscow “does not support attempts to deviate from the international principles enshrined in the UN Charter and replace them with its own rules.”
Russia raised the question of the possibility of postponing the meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly in 2020 year outside the United States. This was announced on Wednesday by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin at a press conference timed to coincide with UN Day. TASS.
“We have indeed raised the issue of considering holding a meeting of the First Committee of the General Assembly and a disarmament commission outside New York in 2020, next year,” he said.
According to Vershinin, US problems in bilateral relations are transferred to the UN site, which negatively affects the organization’s work.

“If, relatively speaking, authorized people, experts whom we send to the UN to work, do not make it to the UN, then this is bad for the UN in the first place. Because the quality of what should happen there, discussions, discussions, decisions, is sharply lost. From the point of view of the international community, this is a loss,” he explained.
The diplomat emphasized that not only Russia is faced with the issue of visas to members of the delegation representing the country at the UN.
“There are also a number of delegations that also receive visa refusals, completely unmotivated, and receive warnings that their delegations and members of delegations who come to New York cannot travel beyond literally a few streets from the UN headquarters “Vershinin added.
“The fact is that, of course, having the UN on your soil is a great honor and a great responsibility. And today I can say, in our opinion, the American side, unfortunately, is not at the level of this responsibility,” he concluded.
Since the beginning of the 74 session of the UN General Assembly, the United States has not issued 18 visas to Russian delegates. In particular, a third of the Russian delegation, which was supposed to take part in the meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, could not get visas.

International principles
Vershinin said that Russia “does not support attempts to deviate from the international principles enshrined in the UN Charter and replace them with its own rules.”
“We will absolutely disagree with the attempts of those who would like to retreat from this, to replace these international universal principles enshrined in the UN Charter with some of their own rules and thus create some unilateral advantages for themselves,” he said.
UN Day is annually celebrated on October 24. Then, in 1945, the Charter of the World Organization came into force, which was established with the goal of ridding humanity of wars and providing a platform for dialogue between nations.
