Russians want to ban participation in the green card lottery

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa proposed blocking in Russia the website of the Green Card lottery, an annual draw for permanent residence permits in the country organized by the US government.

Member of the upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, spoke about visa problems with members of the Russian delegation on the eve of news agencies. According to him, he and 9 people were not able to get permission to enter the US in time to attend the UN session. The Russian Foreign Ministry promised to make the discussion of the incident a central topic at the next meeting of the head of the ministry, Sergey Lavrov, and the head of the US State Department, Mike Pompeo.

Chepa called the visa problem an “unprecedented case” that requires a serious response.

“Our measures will be such that everyone will pay attention to this,” he told Izvestia.

According to him, Russia may restrict access to a site on which citizens can apply for participation in the drawing of residence permits in order to hit the image of the United States as a bastion of democracy.

According to the US State Department, in 2017, a record 434 of thousands of Russian citizens participated in the green card drawing, between them residence permits for 4500 applicants and their close relatives were drawn.

The stated purpose of the drawing of permanent residence permits is to diversify the migration flow to the country at the expense of representatives of different states, races, peoples, age and level of education. In 2017, US President Donald Trump promised to close the program. But still in the 2019 year the draw will be held.

In addition to the official website of the lottery, Chepa suggested blocking the work of intermediaries who help to draw up documents for participation in it. The State Department does not recommend the participant to use the services of intermediaries.
