The engine failed: in Russia, the plane made an emergency landing

The passenger plane Sukhoi Superjet-100 of Yamal Airlines, heading from Tyumen to St. Petersburg, returned to the airport. Immediately after takeoff, the left engine failed, according to preliminary data, due to a bird hit, reported Air force with reference to the airline.

“The Superjet plane landed at Tyumen airport. The landing took place as usual. There were no injuries,” said a TASS source in the aviation services. The airline confirmed that the plane landed safely, RIA Novosti reports.

“It landed without incident,” the press service of the Tyumen Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told Interfax.

The airline has already stated that the cause of the SSJ-100 engine failure was a bird hitting it. In August of this year, an Airbus A321 of Ural Airlines made an emergency landing due to a collision with a flock of seagulls in the Moscow region. He landed in a cornfield.

On board the Superjet that departed from Tyumen there were 83 passengers and four crew members. An airplane on a strip at Roshchino Airport was met by emergency personnel.

What happened

Yamal Airlines said that the plane's left engine failed during takeoff. The pilot decided to run out of fuel and land at the departure airport. The airliner ran out of fuel before landing; the SSJ-100 is not equipped with a fuel dump system.

“During takeoff, the crew felt a blow, and a surge [engine stall] occurred in the engine turbine. The left engine immediately failed,” the airline’s press service told Interfax.

“There was a bang in the airliner’s engine, a burst of flame, and vibration was observed,” a Yamal employee told Vedomosti. After this, according to his version, the commander himself turned off the engine.

The left engine of the airliner did not fail completely and worked with significant interruptions, but its functionality was impaired, an interlocutor of Interfax specified on condition of anonymity.

According to TASS, the aircraft with tail number RA-89081 was produced in April 2017 of the year.

The Ural Investigation Department for Transport is conducting a pre-investigation check. Passengers will be transported to St. Petersburg on a reserve plane, Yamal Airlines reported.
