If Trump closes the border with Mexico, Americans will be without avocado
If US President Donald Trump closes the border with Mexico, in just three weeks America can almost completely be left without avocado, distributors say.
You may have to say goodbye to your favorite avocado toasts, writes Fox News. If Donald Trump fulfills his threat and closes the border with Mexico this week, Americans may be left without a popular product.
A leading distributor and producer of avocados warned that three weeks would be enough for avocados to disappear from stores and from the US if import from Mexico was stopped.
“It’s hard to pick a worse time of year for this because Mexico supplies virtually 100% of the avocados in the U.S. right now,” Steve Barnard, president and CEO of Mission Produce, told Reuters. “Growing in California is just starting, their harvest is very small and will not be relevant for at least another month.”
The problem is not only with avocados. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, almost half of all imported American vegetables and 40% of imported fruits are grown in Mexico.
But lately, Americans have been paying a lot of attention to avocados as part of a healthy diet. With large-scale import losses, US residents are likely to notice a loss. According to the Ag Marketing Resource Center, avocado consumption in the US has increased significantly from the year 2000. In 2017, America imported 2,6 billion fresh avocados. Most came into the country from Mexico.
The increased popularity of avocados has led to the fact that the proceeds from the sale of this vegetable more than from marijuana. The average American eats up 2 times more avocado per year than 10 years ago: 2,7 kg in 2015 year against 1,3 kg in 2006. And a week ago in six states of the USA avocado of Californian production were withdrawn due to the threat of listeria.
Also recall that March 29 Donald Trump threatened to close the border with Mexico in the first week of April. The president said that the Mexican authorities are not making efforts to stop the influx of illegal immigrants in the United States.
