Trump threatens to close Mexico’s border next week

The president said that the Mexican authorities are not making efforts to stop the influx of illegal immigrants in the United States.

US President Donald Trump has again threatened to close the southern border, insisting that Mexico and three Central American countries are doing nothing to stop the influx of illegal immigrants trying to reach the United States, writes "Voice of America".

“Mexico does NOT do ANYTHING to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants to our country,” Trump complained on Thursday on his Twitter account. - They only say, but do nothing. For the first time, Trump allowed the opportunity to close the border in November last year, although he did not fulfill his threat then. However, when, at the end of January, he stopped 35-day blocking of the work of the federal government because of a dispute with Congress over the financing of the wall, the president declared a state of emergency to build a barrier.

Although both houses of Congress adopted a resolution to lift the state of emergency, the House of Representatives failed to collect enough votes this week to overcome the presidential veto, and the decree remained in force. Trump continues to move towards the implementation of his plans to build new fences at the border, using funds allocated for other projects.

The fate of the decree on the state of emergency and the construction of barriers is likely to be decided in the courts. Sixteen states and a number of organizations filed lawsuits against Trump, challenging his decree and plans to use funds allocated for other purposes to build the wall.

On Wednesday, the head of the Customs and Border Protection Service, Kevin McAlinan, said that the situation with migrants at the border had reached a "turning point". According to him, after the checks of immigrants, the authorities have to release them due to the lack of detention facilities.

Makalinan said that because of the influx of illegal immigrants, the authorities had to let them into the country for the first time in more than ten years, confining themselves to giving notice of the need to appear at the asylum hearing. Illegals are not obliged to wear an electronic bracelet on their ankles, allowing them to track their movements.

According to Macalanin, this month the number of illegal immigrants detained by the border service will be more than 55 000 people, which is 500 percent more than in March 2018 of the year.

Earlier, Trump said that Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are misplacing Washington's help to combat poverty and crime, which would help reduce the number of people who want to move to the United States.
