Winter storm Indra: what states are waiting for extreme cold, snow and rain

For most of the United States, the coldest and snowiest times usually come from the middle to the end of January. This year is no exception.

On Tuesday, another winter storm struck the central regions of the United States, leading to a collapse on roads and airports, as well as the closure of schools, writes USA Today.

According to the National Weather Service, on Wednesday a blizzard will intensify throughout the Midwest and around the Great Lakes. In a few days, the worst cold will come to these regions.

On Tuesday, Wyoming had to close the 100 mile of the interstate 80, dozens of accidents were reported in the Denver area, and hundreds of flights were canceled at several airports, the Weather Channel reports.

The channel called this blizzard Winter Storm Indra.

Wisconsin and Illinois have reported fatal accidents due to car accidents on icy roads.

On Tuesday evening, warnings of storms and winds remained in force everywhere from eastern Colorado to northern Michigan. Snow is possible in some areas of the Great Lakes.

"Most of the snow will fall on parts of Interstates 80, 90 and 94 from Nebraska to Wisconsin," AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. The snow is expected to cause icy roads and change residents' daily plans.

Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport was closed on Tuesday night due to snow and should open on Wednesday morning. Flights arriving at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Tuesday night were delayed by an average of six hours.

Omaha, Nebraska; Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Madison and Green Bay, Wisconsin are among the communities that expect the most heavy snowfall on Wednesday, AccuWeather reports.

On Wednesday and Thursday heavy rain will fall on most of the southeast and mid-Atlantic. Due to rain, flooding is possible in large I-95 cities from Washington, DC to Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

Then, when the storm moves offshore, the next arctic surge will occur in the northern Plains and the upper Midwest on Thursday. Eastern states should wait for the change of weather by Thursday evening.

"Temperatures on Thursday are unlikely to reach freezing in areas from North Dakota to Wisconsin, with an average of minus 10 to minus 20 Fahrenheit (minus 23 to minus 29 Celsius)," the weather service said.

Friday may be the coldest winter day in Chicago, says AccuWeather.

Even after the storm has gone, the snow will remain a problem: the weather service warned that “the existing snow cover and strong winds with the arctic cold front could create conditions for a snow storm in parts of the northern Plains from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.”

The ground blizzard occurs when the snow that has already fallen is blown by the wind, which leads to a loss of snow cover stability.

By Friday and weekends, severe frost will move to the east and south of the United States.
