US authorities will allow calls on board aircraft

Passengers of US airlines can allow calls by phone during the flight. Writes TimeModern technologies already allow data exchange via Internet channels. Department of Transportation officials are discussing new rules that would lift the ban on phone calls. Thus, airlines will be able to decide for themselves whether to provide service to their passengers or not.

According to Wall Street JournalMany airplanes today are already equipped with a Wi-Fi network, and modern smartphones allow you to make calls. For example, iPhone users today technically can communicate using FaceTime, WhatsApp, Viber and others. But federal aviation regulations prohibit such calls for the time being.

Journalists of the publication note that most of the trains and intercity buses already have Wi-Fi networks. Meanwhile, for example, the New York subway suffers from the fact that many passengers still have to spend a long time without communication. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that it has been discussing the problem of telephone calls on board for 2 years, and the issue is far from over. “We are concerned about the rights and peace of mind of passengers. For many people in confined spaces, calls can be alarming,” a Department of Transportation spokesman told the WSJ.

Apparently, airlines have much less enthusiasm than officials. Representatives of the Department of Transport say they are seeking to lift the ban on telephone calls already 2 of the year. However, the airlines surveyed by the WSJ are still reserved comments on the initiative. Delta Air Lines Inc. and JetBlue Airways Corp. Already stated that the ban on calls will be valid on their flights, even if the federal rules are changed. American Airlines said that the Wi-Fi on board will be available, but voice services will continue to be banned.

The flight attendants association also spoke against phone calls in the sky. They argue that in-flight telephone communication can cause conflicts on board and jeopardize aviation security. They fear that in an emergency, passengers will rush to make phone calls and not to listen to the instructions of flight attendants.
