2 thousands of immigrants can apply for US citizenship in New York for free
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the authorities would bear the cost of processing applications for US citizenship from 2 to thousands of low-income immigrants. The lucky ones will be selected by lottery as part of the NaturalizeNY program.
“We are a nation of immigrants, and New York believes diversity is our greatest asset,” Cuomo said at the lottery launch. “Today we inform everyone that we invite you to our community with open arms.”
Individuals with an income between $30,240 and $60,480 per year can count on free naturalization.
You can register for participation on the site NaturalizeNY.org or the New Americans Hotline at 1-800-566-7636.
At the moment, the cost of processing all the necessary papers for naturalization is $ 680 per person, says the head of the office of the governor Rossan Rosado.
“We don’t believe that citizenship should be a luxury item,” Rosado explains.
The NaturalizeNY program is implemented with the assistance of the New York Daily News and various public and charitable organizations. The financial burden of paying applications from 2 to thousands of immigrants will reportedly fall on private philanthropists.
“The state’s proposal is fantastic,” says NY Daily News editor-in-chief Jim Rich. “We are glad to be part of such an important program.” There are so many hardworking people who deserve an opportunity like this, and it’s good that their dreams can come true.”
NY Daily News also organizes with the City University of New York (CUNY) hot line on immigration in the United States. Annual project called Citizenship NOW! ("Citizenship Now") in April was already the 14 time.
