Protecting the rights of immigrants in New York: how to help

The election of Donald Trump as president of the United States raised the issue of immigrant protection in many US cities.

A list of ways New Yorkers can help protect the rights of people coming to the city has been published. Time-out.

More than 3 million New Yorkers were born outside the United States, which is about 40% of the city’s resident population.

At the same time, a part of immigrants faced economic problems; some, mostly refugees, cannot forget the horrors they endure in their home countries, there are those who live in the US illegally, and at the same time have children who are American citizens. New York Immigrant Union

This is a group of about 200 rights advocacy organizations that provide support and collect money for immigrants and refugees. They register people for voting, provide legal advice, and conduct trainings on the norms and requirements of US immigration law and English classes.

This organization is always happy to volunteers who can help them teach English at a basic level to immigrants, tell them about the insurance medicine system, or just help the Union in carrying out their activities.

Make the Road New York

This organization has been working in New York since the beginning of 90's and has been working to help poor immigrants from Latin American countries receive medical services, government support, and also provides legal services to visitors to protect their rights.

In addition, language courses are held here, as well as trainings on the topic of immigrants ’labor rights and housing rental rules.

The organization needs volunteers who will teach immigrants the language, the basics of life in New York, and will also share with them basic knowledge of using computers.

HIAS

The organization provides support to refugees from different countries in the process of integration into American society. Center for the Protection of the Rights of Immigrant Children

Every year, thousands of children come to the United States without parents or relatives, trying to escape from war, child labor, or famine in their home country. If they are detained in the United States, in most cases they are sent back to the country from which they fled.

This organization is engaged in providing them with legal assistance and lawyers.

You can help them in their work by becoming a lawyer for underage immigrants in court or simply by writing a few letters of recommendation for children.
