More than 100 types of sweets are recalled in the United States due to infection with a dangerous bacterium

Salmonella is a dangerous bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness in some people. The microorganism can be found in all types of food, including snacks. Just a few weeks ago, Ferrero announced a massive recall of Kinder chocolates due to salmonella contamination. And now Strauss Israel has announced a candy recall due to the same bacterium. The recall includes 101 different brands of candy that Strauss Israel sold in retail stores and online in the United States.

Review of Strauss Israel Elite sweets

The company explained that the candies were made in a facility where tests revealed the presence of salmonella. The production lines and liquid chocolate used to manufacture the products have tested positive for Salmonella.

The following sweets are being recalled: Elite Chocolate, Cakes, Wafers, Energy Grain Snacks, Energy Chocolate Rice Cakes, Chewing Gum and Toffee Candies.

In total, 101 types of sweets are subject to return, and these are not only chocolate ones. The full list is available in the official press release here. link.

Strauss says it is withdrawing all categories of Elite products from the US market. They were sold mainly in the tree-state area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut), California and Florida.

They were also sold on Amazon, Fresh Direct, Passover.com and other online retailers.

The risk of contracting salmonellosis

The manufacturer says he has not received any reports of Salmonella contamination so far. However, symptoms appear after a few days.

Those who become ill may experience fever, diarrhea (it can even be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. However, in rare cases, the infection can cause severe vascular disease. When bacteria enter the bloodstream, it can lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at risk of developing fatal illness from a salmonella infection.

What do we have to do

The manufacturer urges those who bought Elite sweets not to eat them. They should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with symptoms that may indicate a salmonella infection should consult their physician. An accurate diagnosis includes testing for the presence of bacteria.
