Illinois passes three new laws to protect illegal immigrants

“Illinois is and always will be a welcoming state,” Pritzker said during the signing ceremony.

The governor has signed House Bill 2040 bill, which prohibits the construction of private commercial immigration detention centers. It also prohibits local authorities from entering into contracts or conducting financial transactions with similar institutions, with the exception of the provision of food, medical care or other ancillary services.

Illinois already has a moratorium on the construction of any private commercial prisons.

Pritzker also signed House Bill 1637, which prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from carrying out immigration law enforcement functions on behalf of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).

The third bill the Governor signed was House Bill 2691. It provides students who are undocumented immigrants but meet all other academic and financial requirements with access to student financial aid, including the state cash award program or MAP grants.

The governor made it clear that the Illinois immigration policy will be in stark contrast to the policies of US President Donald Trump.

“The job of our law enforcement officers here in Illinois is to protect and serve our community,” Pritzker said.

Lawrence Benito, chief executive of the Illinois Coalition for the Rights of Immigrants and Refugees, said Illinois is making progress, “while our own federal government continues to attack and terrify our communities, put children behind bars, separate families, raid on our neighborhoods, our homes and our jobs. ”
