'Fatal infections': eye drops and ointments withdrawn from Walmart and Walgreens

Time to check your medicine cabinet: Popular eye drops and ointments are being recalled from Walmart and Walgreens over concerns that the contents are unsterile. Use of such products may result in “life-threatening infections or death,” the recall states.

Some over-the-counter eye drops and ointments sold at Walmart and Walgreens stores, as well as some prescription ointments sold at other stores, were withdrawn due to fears that products might be non-sterile, writes USA Today.

Altaire Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in New York, issued a statement about the voluntary recall of products from Walgreens and Walmart and the recall of Perrigo prescription ointments, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The feedback concerns 23 products under different names and brands and 150 suspicious batches of products.

Reviews are called "precautionary measures." The statement said that "Altaire did not receive reports of side effects or any non-conforming results, including sterility tests, for products."

“Use of a non-sterile product intended for sterilization may result in serious and potentially life-threatening infection or death,” the release states.

What withdraws from Walmart

Altaire withdraws 74 positions, which include Equate 10 products and one Support Harmony eye drops, which were discontinued in January 2018.

• Equate Support Advanced Lubricating Eye Drops Preservative Free: 49035-882-54.
• Equate Support Advanced Lubricant Gel Drops Multi Dose Preservative Free: 49035-882-52.
• Equate Support Moisture Lubricant Eye Drops: 49035-145-10.
• Support Harmony Lubricant Eye Drops: 49035-145-10.

What is withdrawn from Walgreens

Altaire has withdrawn 5 of various products that have been produced for the pharmacy network. Here are the products with NDC and lot numbers:

• Lubricant Eye Drops Moisturizing: 0363-0185-13; lot 19095.
• Lubricant Eye Drops Moisturizing Twin Pack: 0363-0185-49; lot 19095.
• Sodium Chloride Ophthalmic Ointment, 5% Hypertonicity Eye Ointment: 0363-7500-50; lot TCI.
• Sodium Chloride Ophthalmic Solution, 5% Hypertonicity Eye Drops: 0363-0193-13; lots 19105 and 19050.
• Lubricant Eye Ointment PF Soothing: 0363-0191-50; lot TDB.

Perrigo Product Recall

Altaire recalled 59 lots of six prescription ointments and 11 lots of over-the-counter Puralube ophthalmic ointments that were “manufactured and labeled exclusively for Perrigo Company PLC”. The products were distributed by Perrigo, the recall notice says.

• Bacitracin Ophthalmic Ointment: 0574-4022-35.
• Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Ointment: 0574-4190-35.
