Russian astronaut denied promotion due to American wife
Yuri Malenchenko was not approved as the first deputy chief of the Cosmonaut Training Center (CTC) because of his American wife RIA News three sources in the rocket and space industry.
Malenchenko married the native of Russia Ekaterina Dmitrieva, who has US citizenship, in 2003 year. It was the first ever wedding in space. The bride was in the Mission Control Center in Houston, the groom was on board the International Space Station. Documents on marriage on behalf of Malenchenko were signed by an American lawyer.
According to one of the agency’s interlocutors, Malenchenko’s candidacy was not approved by the Roskosmos security service. He explained that the position of the first deputy implies access to confidential information. This was confirmed by two more sources.
On the CPC website, Malenchenko is listed as the first deputy chief for the training of astronauts, but in fact he is an adviser to the leader, that is, he performs the functions of the first deputy.
Information about the difficulties with the approval of Malenchenko in the position of RIA Novosti was confirmed by the head of the Central Election Commission Pavel Vlasov. “The issue is almost a year old. So far it is in that state - it has not been approved,” Vlasov explained.
According to him, in this regard, Malenchenko, as an adviser, is entrusted with additional work in supervising the training of astronauts with the execution of the relevant order.
The future astronaut was born on December 22 of 1961 of the year in Svetlovodsk, Kirovograd Region, in the Ukrainian SSR. He is a third-class military pilot with more than 830 flying hours and over 150 skydiving. He was enrolled in the cosmonaut squad in 1987.
Malenchenko made six space flights with a total duration of 827 days 9 hours 22 minutes. He is in second place in the ranking of astronauts and astronauts in this indicator, second only to Gennady Padalka.
