'Russian agent': US imposed sanctions on Ukrainian MP

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against four people suspected of interfering in the US presidential election with Russian support. Among them are three Russians and Ukrainian deputy Andrei Derkach. Writes about this with the BBC.

The department said in a statement that Derkach “was an active Russian agent who maintained close ties with Russian intelligence services for more than 10 years.” He directly or indirectly interfered in the 2020 election campaign.

“From at least late 2019 to mid-2020, Derkach conducted covert influence activities focused on promoting false and unsubstantiated information against American officials,” the department said in a statement.

They recall in particular Derkach’s release of “edited” tapes in order to discredit American political figures.

Sanctions against Derkach and three Russians - Anton Andreev, Daria Aslanova and Artem Livshits - provide for the freezing of all their assets and property in the United States, as well as a ban on American individuals and legal entities from carrying out any financial or other transactions with them.

In May, Derkach released recordings of telephone conversations, which allegedly featured the votes of Petro Poroshenko and former US Vice President Joe Biden, who is now fighting for the presidency with Donald Trump.

According to Derkach, these records are evidence of Ukraine's "external control".

According to them, Biden demanded that Poroshenko fire Prosecutor General Shokin due to the failure of reforms; they also discussed the Burisma case, Ukraine’s cooperation with the IMF, the nationalization of Privatbank, the activities of Naftogaz and tariff increases.

The press service of European Solidarity denied the authenticity of these recordings and called them “a crudely assembled, carefully assembled falsification.”
