The Russian military threatened to ram the American destroyer: what happened

The US destroyer John McCain has plunged into Russia's territorial waters near Vladivostok, the Russian Defense Ministry said. From his statement it follows that the Russian sailors threatened to ram, after which the ship returned to neutral waters. More about the incident told the publication with the BBC.

“Today at 06:17 Moscow time (22:17 the previous day New York time), the US Navy destroyer John McCain, which has been in the Sea of ​​Japan for several days, violated the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in Peter the Great Gulf, going deeper beyond the maritime border line by two kilometers,” the Ministry of Defense said.

After that, the large anti-submarine ship "Admiral Vinogradov" via the international communication channel warned American sailors about the inadmissibility of such actions and the possibility of "using a ramming maneuver to drive the intruder out of the territorial waters."

As follows from the statement, the ship of the Russian Pacific Fleet not only sent a warning, but also changed course, starting to approach the John McCain, after which the American destroyer "immediately went into neutral waters" and "did not undertake repeated attempts to enter the territorial waters."

The press service of the US Seventh Fleet said that the American side does not consider these waters to be Russian.

“On November 24, the John McCain exercised the right to free navigation in the Peter the Great Bay area in the Sea of ​​Japan. This freedom of navigation operation served to challenge Russia's excessive territorial claims. She supported rights, freedoms and the ability to legally use the sea in accordance with the provisions of international law,” the statement said.

The Gulf of Peter the Great in Russia is considered a "historical gulf" and on this basis they refer it to their territorial waters. Moreover, the width of the entrance to it exceeds 24 miles (38,6 km). In the law of the sea, a bay can be referred to territorial waters if the entrance to it does not exceed this distance, and all the shores of the bay belong to one state.

John McCain is based out of Yokosuka, Japan. This is a guided-missile destroyer armed with Tomahawk missiles. The ship is named after two admirals, John S. McCain Jr. and John S. McCain Sr., the father and grandfather of the late Republican Senator John McCain.

Peter the Great Bay is the largest bay in the Sea of ​​Japan off the Russian coast. It is located in the south of Primorsky Krai, Vladivostok is on the shore of the bay.
