Parents who chained 13 children to bed were sentenced

57-year-old David Turpin and 50-year-old Louise Turpin received a life sentence with the possibility of parole through 25 years after they pleaded guilty to the fact that over the years held their children in captivity and tortured them, writes CNN.

“My parents took my whole life away from me,” said one of the daughters, identified as Jane Doe No. 4. She is one of two daughters now in college who came to court to testify against their parents and talk about how they were tortured.

The couple was arrested early last year after one of the 13 children managed to escape from home and call the police. Authorities reported that 13 boys and girls aged from 2 to 29 years were isolated from the outside world, they were not allowed to follow the rules of hygiene, were denied food and medical care.

“Sometimes they were tied up and held in this position for weeks or even months,” said the district attorney of Riverside County, California.

One of the sons John Doe number two told the court:

“I cannot describe in words the hardships we went through growing up. Sometimes I still have nightmares about what happened, like when my brothers and sisters were chained or beaten,” he recalls.

He is currently studying in college and is working to get a degree in software development. Last year he learned to swim and ride a bike.

“I love my parents and have forgiven them for what they did to us,” the guy said in court.

David and Louise Turpin took the opportunity of the last word in court and apologized to their children, expressing the hope that the children would succeed in all their endeavors.

“I apologize for all the pain I caused my children. I love them more than they can imagine,” Louise said, adding that she believes God has a plan for each of her children.

Jay Dow number 4 burst into tears at the trial and asked for help from the dog Reider, a special dog who was brought in to provide emotional support for psychologically injured people.

David Turpin burst into tears during the trial. His lawyer read out the beginning of Turpin’s speech, in which his father expressed the hope that his children would succeed and maintain close relations with each other, since their parents would not be able to be with them.

“I thank God for all my children. I regret if I caused them harm in any way,” David Turpin said in a statement.

The court also issued protective orders for each child. Thus, 10 children received a 10-year restraining order, and two received a 5-year restraining order. These orders prohibit David and Louise Turpin from approaching or communicating with the children. They are not allowed to contact children either in person or by telephone, mail, social networks or third parties.

When police found children in January 2018, many were between the ages of 2 and 29. Some adult children were so exhausted that they looked like teenagers.

The children did not visit doctors for more than four years, none of them had ever been at the dentist’s office in their entire life.

Children are often tied up for weeks or months. At first they were tied up with ropes, but then, when one of the children ran away, they were chained to their beds.

The story was revealed when the 17-year-old girl was able to escape. Together with several brothers and sisters, she planned to escape more than two years. She managed to steal a mobile phone from a house, run out into the street and call the police.
