How are 13 children living out of captivity in California now living

Some of the 13 brothers and sisters who were held captive by their parents in a California home “are beginning to make plans for the future,” reports ABC News.

“Their minds are just being opened up,” said Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel, “They have choices that no one controls.”

Children, especially those who are older, now "get up and decide for themselves what they will do during the day and decide what kind of food they want to eat."

“They start with very basic things,” she added, “but the progress is very, very good.”

David and Louise Turpin are accused of regularly beaten up their children, did not let them out of the house and allowed to take a shower only once a year. According to prosecutors, children were chained to the bed and not allowed to go out, even when they needed to go to the toilet.

Children have not visited the hospital for the past four years and have never been to the dentist.

Turpins арестовали in January after their 17-year-old daughter ran away from home and reported to the police.

According to prosecutors, all children, except the youngest, suffered from severe malnutrition. The eldest daughter, who turned 29 years old, weighed 38 kg when rescuing.

David and Louise Turpin were charged with 12 torture points, 12 incarceration points, 7 cases of abuse of adult power and 6 cases of child abuse. David Turpin was also charged with a sign of indecent behavior with a child under the age of 14. They have not pleaded guilty.

Meanwhile, brothers and sisters are recovering in hospitals. Because of their age, they were separated and placed in two different hospitals, however they communicate by Skype or Whatsapp. Spiegel added that they gained weight.

Some of the siblings "didn't really know what a toothbrush was for," Spiegel said.

According to her, some of the victims never had shoes. She said that when one boy was given the first shoes, but they were too tight, he did not abandon them until he appearedоa better pair, because he was afraid that he would never be given another shoe.

Spiegel described adult children as "loving, warm and affectionate," and added that they appreciate "what we take for granted."
