Mexico recruited Russian citizen arrested in Florida
US authorities in Miami (Florida) arrested a Mexican citizen, who, according to them, was recruited by a representative of the Russian authorities in order to find the “source in the US government” and establish its number, the US Department of Justice said, writes "Voice of America".
Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes, who lives in Singapore, was arrested on February 16 after arriving at Miami International Airport, from where he was planning to fly to Mexico with his wife.
A representative of the Russian authorities recruited Fuentes in 2019, and at a meeting in Russia earlier in February, he gave him a description of the car of an American government source, instructing him to find it and establish its number, the department said.
The message does not provide details about the source.
February 14, the couple drove up to the house where the source lives, and Fuentes's wife photographed the license plate of the car.
A photograph of the license plate was found on her phone when Customs and Border Guard agents checked the couple’s phones at the airport.

“Fuentes admitted to law enforcement officials that he acted on the instructions of a Russian government official when he conducted the operation,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement.
The Russian embassy in Washington has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Fuentes was arrested on charges of "acting in the United States in the interests of a foreign government (Russia) without notifying the Attorney General and conspiring for the same purpose."
He should appear at the hearing of the case on his arrest on February 21, and the court hearing on charges against him is scheduled for March 3. Both sessions will take place at the Magistrate's Court in Miami, Florida.
