Former US Vice President Joe Biden, who until recently was considered the Democrats' favorite in the election race, got his first major victory. He won by a wide margin at party primaries in South Carolina, writes Air force.

Biden scored 48,4% of the vote, ahead of Bernie Sanders by 19,9% ​​and billionaire Tom Steyer by 11,3%.

However, the final choice of the Democratic Party's candidate is still a long way off. Super Tuesday on March 3 will be important, when primaries will be held in 14 states at once.

In July, the name of the rival candidate Trump will be announced at the party congress.

According to Kirill Belyaninov, a correspondent for the BBC Russian Service from Washington, before the start of the primary elections, 77-year-old Joe Biden was considered the leader of the race among the Democrats.

According to sociologists, he could become Trump’s likely rival in the November 2020 elections. Despite such forecasts, Biden lost the first primaries - in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. And the first place in the Democratic race was taken by independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who in the United States is considered by many to be a supporter of socialist views.

During a meeting with his supporters, Joe Biden said that voting in South Carolina gave a fresh start to his election campaign.

“Just a few days ago, the press and political pundits were saying that my campaign was over. Now, thanks to all of you who support the Democratic Party, we have won. And we came back to life again!” - he said.

The remaining contenders from the Democratic Party - former mayor of South Bend in Indiana Pete Buttigieg, senators Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar - remained far behind the leaders of the race.

The main reason was the demographics of the state, where African Americans make up a large part of the population. According to them, Joe Biden, who became the first US president to have a president of African American descent, is better than other candidates.

It also became known that billionaire Tom Steyer, who acted as an independent candidate and spent only $ 22 million on television in South Carolina, decided to withdraw his candidacy, refusing to participate in the race.

Another billionaire, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who did not take part in previous primaries, this time failed to become one of the leaders in the race. However, his campaign headquarters reported that the businessman does not plan to give up and will take part in the next primaries.

One person Biden should especially thank for his success is Rep. James Clyburn, an influential voice in the state's black community who endorsed the former vice president last Wednesday.

Exit polls show Clyburn's support was a big factor for about half of the state's voters — and likely one of the reasons why Biden received so many African-American votes.

If he manages to demonstrate something similar in other states, he will be able to impose a serious fight on Bernie Sanders.
