Democrats' next debate: more was said about Russia than about the USA

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg raised the topic of alleged Russian interference in US elections, arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to increase the chances of Senator Bernie Sanders to stand for Democratic presidential candidate and thereby contribute to the victory of current US President Donald Trump at universal elections in November 2020. “Donald Trump believes that it would be better if he is president. I don’t think so, ”Bloomberg said at the Democratic debate in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Vladimir Putin believes that Donald Trump should be the president of the United States, and therefore Russia helps you,” said Bloomberg, addressing Sanders.

Some Democrats believe that it will be easier for Trump to defeat Sanders in the November elections due to the latter's socialist orientation, and therefore Moscow secretly promotes Sanders, which the Kremlin strongly denies.

An annoyed Sanders replied: "Hey Mr. Putin, believe me, if I become president, you will no longer interfere in the US election."

Bloomberg is not the only candidate who questions the senator’s election from Vermont in a standoff with President Trump.

Former South Bend Mayor in Indiana, Pete Buttigic, took advantage of Sanders calling himself a Democratic Socialist and his opponent’s recent remarks when he spoke about the educational achievements of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

“I don’t want a scenario in which Donald Trump nostalgic for the public policy of the 1950s, and Bernie Sanders - for the revolutionary politics of the 1960s,” Buttigic declared.

“Bernie will lose to Donald Trump, and the House of Representatives and the Senate will go to the Republicans,” said Bloomberg four days before the important presidential primaries in South Carolina.

To this, Sanders replied that, according to polls, in the last 50 hypothetical confrontations between him and Trump, he defeated the incumbent 47 times.

“Can you imagine a moderate Republican who would vote for him,” Bloomberg answered, looking directly at Sanders.

Another candidate, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Sanders' longtime ally, said: "I would be a better president than Bernie." According to Warren, she could achieve common progressive political goals for them, but he did not.

Although the debate was dominated by domestic political issues, candidates also touched on foreign policy topics such as the Middle East and Cuba.

After Senator Warren called for the return of US troops stationed in the Middle East, Bloomberg said a military presence was needed to repel attacks on the United States.

Without naming her by name, Bloomberg accused Warren of “irresponsible” foreign policy proposal to withdraw all military units from the Middle East. Then, for the second time during the debate, he referred to his involvement in the events of September 11, 2001 as evidence that he was ready for the presidential duties.

“We live in a dangerous world,” he said. “If we did not understand this after September 11, then I don’t know what can teach us.”

Sanders and Bloomberg addressed the issue of Israel and the advisability of returning to Tel Aviv the American embassy, ​​which Trump moved to Jerusalem.

“We will study this issue,” said Sanders, after which he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “the reactionary racist who runs this country.”

Bloomberg did not agree with the new transfer of the embassy.

“This happened, and you need to leave him in Jerusalem,” he said.

Warren advocated a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after which she stated that it was not up to the United States to decide where to place the embassy.

A recent poll in South Carolina showed former Vice President Joe Biden ahead of Sanders by a margin. At stake in this state are 54 congress delegates who will elect an official candidate from the Democratic Party. But analysts do not rule out the possibility that Sanders will emerge victorious.

Voting in South Carolina will take place three days before the “Super Tuesday” March 3, following which 1357 delegates will be distributed immediately.

Biden, who once led polls in the race to become Trump's rival, finished second in Nevada and fell even further behind Iowa и New Hampshire.
