The European Council said in a statement that such a decision is a “response” to Russia’s “unprovoked and unjustified military aggression” against Ukraine and the Russian practice of forcibly issuing Russian passports to residents of the occupied regions.

“Today, the Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament reached a preliminary agreement on the decision not to recognize Russian travel documents issued in Ukraine and Georgia. The agreed text must be finally adopted by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament before going through the formal adoption procedure. Ukrinfrom.

"This decision follows the Russian unilateral decision to recognize the independence of the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008," the statement said.

Russian documents issued in the occupied territories will not be accepted as valid travel documents, in particular when obtaining visas or for crossing the borders of the Schengen countries.

Such documents are no longer recognized in most member states, other European countries are in the process of adopting such non-recognition. The decision, agreed at the level of the Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, is designed to develop common approaches in this work, ensure the proper functioning of control at the external borders of the EU, as well as compliance with a common visa policy and security measures for all EU member states.
