The EU is discussing a ban on entry into its territory for Ukrainians with Russian passports

“They instructed the European Commission to study the possibility of banning entry into the EU for citizens with these passports,” said RFE/RL correspondent in Brussels Rikard Jozwiak.

This is primarily about the Ukrainians who live in the territory of Donbass, which is controlled by the separatists, but also about several other categories that Russian President Vladimir Putin a few weeks ago instructed apply for Russian citizenship in a simplified manner for three months.

Also, according to him, the ambassadors discussed the possibility of imposing European sanctions in connection with the certification of Ukrainians by the Russian authorities. But, according to Yosvyak, so far only seven EU countries support such sanctions.

Recall Putin's decree on the simplified granting of citizenship of the Russian Federation to Ukrainians was signed on May 1.

The decree concerns:

• Ukrainian citizens who live in the territory of the Donbass controlled by pro-Russian separatists, as well as their children, including adopted and adopted spouses and parents;
• Ukrainians who were born and lived in the Crimea before the annexation of the peninsula by Russia in 2014, as well as their children, including adopted and adopted children, spouses and parents;

• Ukraine appealed to the UN Security Council in connection with the decision of the President of Russia, and also informed the Council of Europe. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on Ukraine’s international partners to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation.
• President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko described the actions of the Kremlin as a preparation for the annexation of Donbass and also called on the international community to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation.
• The winner of the presidential election, Vladimir Zelensky, did not publicly respond to the Kremlin’s demarche. A statement appeared on the Zelensky Team’s Facebook page, which states that by distributing passports Putin actually recognized Russia as an occupant state.
• In the US, Putin’s actions were described as destabilizing and absurd, and also recalled support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
