Putin has simplified obtaining Russian citizenship for some Ukrainians

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the acquisition of Russian citizenship for certain categories of Ukrainians. The corresponding decree was published on the site of the Kremlin.

So, the right to apply for admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified procedure is granted to:

• Ukrainians born and permanently residing in the territory of Sevastopol and the Crimea and who left the peninsula before March 18 2014. It is also about their children, including adopted children, spouses and parents. It clarifies that the decree deals with such citizens of Ukraine, who do not have citizenship (citizenship) of another state.
• stateless persons born and residing in the Crimea who left the peninsula before 18 in March 2014, as well as persons who have been illegally deported from the territory of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
• Ukrainians and stateless persons who have a temporary residence permit in Russia, a residence permit, a certificate of temporary asylum, a refugee certificate or certificate of a participant in the state program to assist the voluntary resettlement in Russia of compatriots living abroad who lived permanently in certain areas of Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine as of April 2014, as well as their children, spouses and parents.
• citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and Syria, who were born on the territory of the RSFSR and were citizens of the USSR.

Among the documents that the specified categories of Ukrainian citizens and stateless persons must submit to obtain Russian citizenship are “documents confirming the absence of drug addiction and infectious diseases that pose a danger to others” and a certificate of absence of HIV infection.

However, these documents are not submitted by those who have a temporary residence permit in the Russian Federation, a residence permit, refugee certificate, certificate of temporary asylum or a participant in the State Program to assist the voluntary resettlement in Russia of compatriots living abroad.

The decree stipulates that the period for consideration of applications for admission to citizenship of the Russian Federation and making decisions on them should not exceed three months.

It will be possible to submit an application in any region of Russia to the territorial body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation at the place of residence or place of stay.

The decree comes into force from the date of signing.
