Police say they found Palmer "upright" on a couch with serious injuries inflicted by what appeared to be an axe. Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said that when police arrived, they thought she was dead, but soon realized she was still alive and breathing shallowly.
According to Mellinger, one witness reported seeing Palmer's brother, Daniel, on her porch around midnight the night before she was discovered. According to the sheriff, there were no phone records, no surveillance footage, no witnesses in the Palmer case.
Police investigated several people but were never able to file charges. According to Mellinger, Palmer's care facility called his office a couple of weeks ago and said she could talk to the authorities.
Palmer was only able to answer yes or no questions, but gave the police enough evidence to arrest Daniel, Mellinger said.
