He worked in Russia and Israel: what is known for the key candidate for the post of US ambassador to Ukraine
The White House has sent the US Senate the nomination of Keith Dayton for the post of US Ambassador to Ukraine. This is stated in a statement by the press service, writes "Voice of America".
Earlier, President Trump proposed the candidacy of retired Lieutenant General Keith Dayton for the post of US ambassador to Ukraine.
Cat Dayton is well acquainted with the situation in Ukraine and is now the US military adviser to Ukraine in the defense sphere. Since 2010, he heads the George Marshall think tank in Germany, and has served in the U.S. Army for 40 years. Dayton's nomination as ambassador was welcomed by former United States ambassadors.
According to liga.net, Dayton is 71 years old. He is a retired lieutenant general since 2010. He joined the U.S. Army in 1970. He studied at the Russian Institute of the US Army in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany). Now it is the European Center for Security Research. J. Marshall, which Dayton has led since 2010.
He was educated at several elite educational institutions: the College of William and Mary, the University of Cambridge and the University of Southern California. He speaks Russian and German.

In November 2018, at the time, the head of the U.S. Department of Defense, James Mattis, appointed Dayton to serve as senior U.S. defense adviser in Ukraine.
“I am familiar with the culture of your country and the challenges that it faces in implementing the principles and standards of the Alliance. I will help you with this. I will be very committed to the cause and want to find a Ukrainian solution to implement these standards,” Keith Dayton noted during a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak in Kyiv in November 2018.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor calls Dayton a “military professional” and has no party affiliation.
“He is a three-star general and is highly respected,” Taylor told VOA. In his opinion, there should be no problems with the approval of Dayton’s candidacy in the Senate, since military men like him are highly respected.
Another ex-ambassador, John Herbst, believes that Dayton will be a strong diplomatic representative.
“We need an ambassador because it sends a clear message: the United States is interested in Ukraine,” he told Voice of America.
According to him, Dayton, who worked in Moscow, perfectly understands the Kremlin’s policies.
“He worked in Europe and understands the US interest in supporting Ukraine to counter Kremlin aggression. Dayton is well aware that Putin is playing a revisionist game that poses a threat to American security. And that’s why Ukraine’s strong support against Russian aggression is so important,” Herbst added.
