Gerard Depardieu slams Putin over Ukraine invasion: Kremlin says he 'understands nothing'

French actor Gerard Depardieu, who received Russian citizenship in 2013, said he strongly condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin because of the invasion of Ukraine. Depardieu called Russia's invasion of Ukraine "an insane and unacceptable excess." At the same time, he stressed that the Russian people are not responsible for the unacceptable actions of their leaders. Depardieu said he would donate all proceeds from the sale of tickets for three concerts in Paris in early April to support the victims of the war in Ukraine.

Depardieu had already made calls on March 1 to stop the fighting and start negotiations.

The famous but controversial French actor left France to protest the super-rich tax and received a Russian passport from Vladimir Putin in January 2013.

In 2015, Ukraine blacklisted Russian citizen Gerard Depardieu and banned him from entering for five years, including because of his statements in which the actor denied the very existence of an independent Ukraine.

The Kremlin said that Depardieu "does not understand what is happening"

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the actor "probably doesn't fully understand what's going on."
