A woman died from a shark bite while saving her 5-year-old daughter from a predator.
On December 2, in the city of Melaka off the coast of Mexico, a young mother died while saving her 5-year-old daughter from a shark. The predator bit off a woman's leg, causing her to bleed to death on the beach, reports New York Post.

Local residents identified the woman as 26-year-old Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez, a former marine biology student at the University of Guadalajara who lived in the area in western Jalisco state.
Jimenez was swimming in the ocean with her daughter when she apparently spotted the shark and rushed to carry the girl to a floating play platform located 20 meters from the shore, said Rafael Araiza, head of the local civil defense department.

Jimenez barely managed to save her five-year-old child from danger when the predator struck, closing its jaws around her leg near her hip.
Despite the quick response of rescuers, Jimenez died from blood loss due to the massive wound. Her daughter remained unharmed.
It is not yet known what species of shark carried out the fatal attack.

According to civil protection officials in the municipality of Zihuatlán, the horrific incident occurred during a swimming competition nearby.
“Our team was providing support activities during a swimming competition in the Bay when we received a report of a person having trouble getting out of the sea,” the statement said. “When they got there, they found a dead woman with one leg amputated, apparently from a shark attack.”
Authorities closed beaches in Melaka and the nearby town of Barra de Navidad to swimming as a precaution.

Shark attacks are relatively rare in Mexico. In 2019, an American diver survived a shark bite on his forearm in Magdalena Bay off the coast of Baja California Sur.
