In Ohio, there is a surge in mysterious childhood pneumonia: it is associated with China
Ohio has become the first US state to report a growing mystery of childhood pneumonia amid a surge in cases in China. Writes about this New York Post.
Warren County has reported 142 pediatric cases since August.
This is above the county average and meets the definition of an outbreak according to the Ohio Department of Health.
However, officials believe this is not a new respiratory disease, but "rather a significant increase in the number of pneumonias typically seen at one time."

The disease has spread to several school districts, and the average age of those affected is 8 years old, the local health district said.
So far, there is “no compelling pattern” among children diagnosed, but many are showing symptoms of cough, fever and fatigue.
The patients were diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia, streptococcus and adenovirus, which is a cold.
Warren County health officials are investigating all "possible links and risk factors."
The health organization is urging students and their loved ones to wash their hands, cover their coughs, stay home when sick, and keep their vaccines up to date as precautions this winter.
China has seen a significant increase in pneumonia among children in some areas of the country, and hospitals are overcrowded.
The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a formal information request for "additional epidemiological, clinical and laboratory information" from China.

The request itself is common, but it is relatively rare for the UN to do so publicly.
Some schools in Beijing have suspended classes in classes where there were high infection rates.
Other countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands have also seen an increase in pneumonia cases since the summer, according to the University of Minnesota.
