A herd of elephants attacked a car that hit a baby elephant on a highway in Malaysia: it looks like the animals were taking revenge

A herd of elephants in Malaysia crashed a car after it hit one of their cubs on the evening of November 26. There was a 48-year-old man in the car along with his wife and 23-year-old son, reports Insider.

The elephant conservationist says the understandable reaction shows how the highly emotional animals are willing to do anything to protect themselves.

“If you put yourself in their shoes, if your child was hit by a car because of the driver’s negligence. I imagine you or your family might also become enraged and scream or attack people,” said Joyce Poole, co-founder of an elephant research and conservation nonprofit called Elephant Voices.

What happened

The family was traveling along the main highway from Penang island to the northeastern coastal state of Terenggan on the evening of November 26. It is noted that there was light rain and fog at the time, and the Perodua Axia was “making a left turn on the highway” when it hit the baby elephant.

When the baby elephant fell to the ground, a pack of elephants attacked the car in retaliation, breaking the side doors and all the windows. The baby elephant was able to get up and the herd ran away.

No injuries were reported.

Poole, a wildlife ecologist who studies elephant behavior, said what the herd did to the car was "not atypical" for these highly protective, emotional creatures.

“They’re a really tight-knit family,” Poole said.

According to her, female elephants live together all their lives, and the matriarchal society is very loyal, especially to their offspring.

“So, of course, if they feel that a member of their family is in danger, they unite as a single force. And whether that means just making threats and causing a disturbance or crashing a car, they will do it,” Poole added.

Poole explained that when humans or other animals threaten a member of the pack, the herd forms what experts call a “coalition” and comes “to the rescue” as a unit to attack the aggressor.

“If a baby elephant so much as squeaks, everyone comes running and looks to see if everything is okay,” Poole said.
