Lightning kills 24 people in two days in India
Twenty-four people have been killed by lightning strikes and about 23 injured due to heavy rains in the western Indian state of Gujarat over the past two days, reports Reuters.
According to the state government, the state experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and hail on November 26 and 27.
At the same time, in some places up to 144 mm of precipitation fell in 24 hours. The rains damaged homes and killed livestock across the state.

“We will soon launch an investigation to assess the damage,” Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavij Patel said on November 27, adding that compensation would be paid to the victims.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall in parts of the state on November 27.

Gujarat is known for rain-related disasters. In August 2020, 14 people were killed in just two days in the state due to various incidents related to heavy rains and floods.
A year earlier, in August 2019, 31 people died in rain-related incidents in the state.
