'Nobody will return the lesson to us': the teacher did not interrupt the lecture during the shooting at the University of Perm

One of the teachers of the Perm State University of Russia continued to teach classes even after the shots were heard. He explained this by saying that the barricades will not help students survive. Writes about it Hromadske.

When on September 20 the shooter entered the eighth building of the university, on one of the upper floors a couple was walking in Russian, led by the teacher Oleg Syromyatnikov.

At that moment, the frightened mother of one of the students ran into the classroom and explained that there was a shooter below. But this did not make an impression on the teacher - he continued to give the lecture and asked not to disturb him.

The students tried to explain to Syromyatnikov that the attack on the university was serious, and asked him to barricade the audience. To which the teacher replied: “Barricades will not help. If they want to kill, they will kill.”

The teacher was not embarrassed even when someone knocked on the door - the teacher simply began to lecture in a whisper. According to the students, during the attack Syromyatnikov received a call from the dean: he allegedly asked the teacher to continue the lecture.

Only riot police could stop the teacher, whose fighters evacuated people from the corps. But even then Syromyatnikov was unhappy that he was being torn away from the educational process.

The teacher at that time led a couple on the history of Russian literature. The media received an audio recording of part of the lecture and provided excerpts from the conversation. Shots are heard there as Oleg Syromyatnikov continues to tell the training material.

“Girls, you are disturbing me. Mind your own business there, but I’ll ask for this material. No one will return this couple to us,” you can hear on the audio recording.

One of the students thinks that perhaps the teacher wanted to calm them down by continuing the lecture. But she says that it would be calmer for her if she "could just hide under the desk and not think that the material he is voicing should be recorded."

The Perm University reported that they will conduct a check after a precedent with a teacher.

Oleg Syromyatnikov, in a conversation with reporters, explained that in this situation he did the right thing. According to him, when the students reported that they were writing about the shooter on the Internet, he immediately called the dean.

“The dean told me to continue the class. Moreover, the information was not official yet. I remained calm and continued the lecture,” Syromyatnikov emphasized.

The teacher says that he immediately closed the metal doors of the classroom from the inside. Like, it was impossible to pierce them with a shot.

“Would it be better if the audience panicked? So that students start jumping out of windows and get broken necks?” - he asked in response.
