Mysterious death: in the hot pool of Yellowstone found the foot of a man

A man's foot was found in a hot pool in Yellowstone. Nearby, investigators found the victim's car, handwritten poems, a photo album, and $447 in his wallet. CBS.

The missing man, whose foot was found floating in the Yellowstone geothermal pool, did not have a suicide note in his car. Investigators found his laptop computer, notepads and handwritten poetry, according to National Park Service documents released Jan. 3.

Law enforcement investigation documents posted online provided new details but no hard evidence of how 70-year-old Il Hoon Ro of Los Angeles died and how his foot, still in his boot, ended up in Abyss Pool last summer.
Park officials said earlier that they did not suspect the murder.

A park visitor first reported the black boot on 16 August. Although park officials previously found two size 9 and 10 soles in the pool on August 8 and 12, according to a park ranger report released on January 3.

Investigators used a DNA sample from a relative to identify Il Hong Ro from the human remains in the shoe. The documents do not describe the discovery of any other remains from the search of the pool and its surroundings, but note apparent "adipose tissues" floating in the 60-degree temperature pool.

Investigators took samples but were unable to conclusively identify the substance in the released reports.

It remained unclear whether Hong Ro traveled alone and exactly when he disappeared. According to the documents, investigators determined that on the night of July 30, he was staying at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, about an hour north of the pool.

The Kia crossover ended up being the visitor's only car parked by the pool. Inside, investigators found various items, including a wallet containing his driver's license and $477, a photo album, notepads, and a book of poetry with handwritten notes, according to the documents.

The poems and notes were not written in English. Investigators using Google Translate have not found anything that points to a suicide note, according to reports.

One of the hundreds of hot springs in the national park, Abyss Pool is 16m deep, making it one of the deepest hot springs in the park. The constant circulation in the basin prevents it from erupting like the famous Yellowstone geysers.

Walking down the high sidewalks around the geyser pools is extremely dangerous.

“Boiling water shoots directly beneath the thin crust of most geyser basins, and many people suffer severe burns when they break through the fragile surface,” the park’s website says. “Some people even died.”

More than 20 people have died as a result of exposure to Yellowstone's geothermal pools, geysers, mud pots, steam vents and hot springs, according to the park's website.
