Truck drove into a herd of bison near Yellowstone, killing 13 animals

On Dec. 28, thirteen bison died in a truck accident near Yellowstone National Park, reports USA Today.

The accident occurred on Highway 191 near mile marker 4 in southern Montana on January 30th. The area is close to the western entrance to the national park. Authorities said the truck hit 13 bison.

Some of them were later euthanized "due to severe injuries".

Officials said bison are often seen near roads and trails during the winter months because they find it easier to navigate.

“We routinely deal with wildlife being hit on roadways in our area due to our close proximity to Yellowstone National Park,” the Department of Wildlife said. “We are always saddened by any of these incidents, especially when so many animals die.”

Police are reminding people to slow down in certain road and weather conditions, noting that icy roads are more difficult to brake. The condition of the road at the time of the crash "would have dictated driving below the posted speed limit". Temperatures were below freezing at the time of the West Yellowstone accident, according to the Weather Underground.

Officials initially thought several cars were involved in the buffaloes' deaths, but determined that two other cars were not involved.

Bison, the largest land mammal in North America, have been living in Yellowstone since prehistoric times, according to the national park. This species was on the verge of extinction due to hunting in the 1800s before it received protection from the US Army.

As of summer 2021, there were about 5 bison in the area, according to officials. Animals can often be seen in herds. Police said the Montana Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
