WHO: coronavirus can become a constant infection that kills people every year
Perhaps the coronavirus will never disappear and simply join the viruses that kill people around the world every year, said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the emergency program of the World Health Organization, on May 13. CNN.
“Coronavirus may become another endemic virus and will never go away. HIV is not gone,” Ryan said.
“I'm not comparing the two diseases, but I think it's important to be realistic. I’m not sure anyone can predict when this disease will go away, or if it will go away at all,” the doctor added.
“We may have a chance of eradicating the virus with a vaccine, but that vaccine needs to be available, it needs to be highly effective and it needs to be suitable for everyone,” Ryan said. “The disease may develop into a long-term problem, but it may not.”
However, the WHO epidemiologist for infectious diseases, Dr. Maria van Kerkkhove, believes that the future of coronavirus need not be bleak.
“The trajectory of this outbreak is in our hands,” Van Kerkhove said during a May 13 briefing.

“The global community has come together to work in solidarity,” she said. “We have seen how countries control this virus. We've seen countries take public health action."
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhan Gebreisus endorsed the opinion of van Kerkkhove and added: “We all must contribute to ending this pandemic.”
