In Florida, a man returned a rented car with his granddaughter in the back seat

A Florida man has been charged with child neglect after he turned in a rental car and forgot his one-year-old granddaughter was in the back seat. The edition told in more detail USA Today.

62-year-old David Towner spent the whole day looking after his granddaughter, who is just under 2 years old. He left the car at a rental office near Daytona Beach International Airport, after which the man was picked up by his daughter.

The child was in the car in the parking lot for almost an hour until a Hertz car rental worker found him, Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigators said in a statement.

On the way back to Towner's house, the daughter asked about the child, and he replied that the granddaughter was in the house with his neighbor.

Meanwhile, a rental company employee checked the car and found a girl in the back seat of a 2019 Chevy Equinox.

The girl was slightly warmer than usual, with traces of dried tears, but she was breathing normally, Sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant said.

The temperature in the unshaded parking lot at the time of the incident was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26,6 Celsius), investigators said.

“The child was scared and hot, but, fortunately, he was in good health when the doctors examined him,” Gant said.

Police and rental employees were initially unable to reach Towner, but 911 dispatchers alerted them that the baby's mother was already on her way to the airport.

The woman, referring to the words of her father, told the investigators that he first told her that he had left the child at home, but when she got home, she did not find her daughter there. Then the mother found out that the grandfather had left his granddaughter in the rented car.

The child was returned to the mother, but the Department of Children and Families was notified of the incident.

When the police contacted Towner, he repented and cooperated. He was charged with one count of child neglect. He is in the Volusia County Jail on $2500 bail.
