The power of the 'little blue pill': scientists have found that Viagra is very effective in treating cancer

A new study published in Cell Reports Medicine claims Viagra is effective in treating esophageal cancer. BGR.

The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council, which found that phosphodiesterase type 5 or PDE-5 inhibitors can help shrink swelling in the esophagus. In addition, PDE-5 inhibitors seem to help eliminate patient resistance to chemotherapy, and since Viagra is a PDE-5 inhibitor, it also becomes an unexpected anti-cancer drug.

Esophageal cancer also tends to progress more rapidly. This is because the microenvironment (the area immediately around the tumor) is made up of molecules and blood vessels that have become infected. They form a protective zone around the tumor, making it resistant to chemotherapy. The use of PDE-5 inhibitors as an anti-cancer drug makes tumors more susceptible to chemotherapy.

According to data collected in studies, only one in 10 patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer lives more than 10 years after diagnosis. Because of these complications, many attempts have been made to develop anti-cancer drugs. However, none of them has been shown to be effective in increasing the chemoresponsiveness of cancer-neighbouring fibroblasts (CAF) around esophageal cancer.

But since Viagra and other PDE-5 inhibitors seem to make CAFs more responsive to chemotherapy, they may prove to be a reliable and effective anti-cancer drug. Of course, these results are highly skewed as the researchers say they are difficult to evaluate due to varying diagnostic times and low response rates.
