An unexpected sign of aging: if you use these emojis, then young people will definitely not understand you

Undo culture has officially arrived in emoji too. Generation Z (born circa 1995-2010) describe the popular thumbs up emoji as rude and hostile. After a Reddit user confessed that he was "not old enough to feel comfortable using a thumbs up emoji," others echoed him, naming other common emoji they consider aggressive, such as the red heart.

“To younger people, the thumbs-up emoji looks like passive-aggressive,” the 24-year-old Reddit user wrote.

"It's very rude if someone just gives you a thumbs up," the users added. “It took me a while to adjust to using them at work.”

People older than Gen Z are baffled by this reaction and note that they use thumbs up in work-related chats to signal “I approve” or “I understand and get to work.”

Part of the problem is that young people tend to jokingly give the thumbs up.

“I use this emoji only with sarcasm, although sometimes I’m not even sure that irony is visible,” said 24-year-old Barry Kennedy. He only uses it to communicate with boomers like his parents or older colleagues.

One anonymous office worker explained this as "the difference in the culture of communication between generations."

“Everyone in an office my age doesn’t do this, but Generation X always does,” he wrote. “It took me a little time to adjust and not bother with what it means, because of which they are angry with me.”

Others have complained that the emoji has a message of disdain.

One Reddit user pointed out that the thumbs up actually means “I have read your post and have nothing to add; I hope all the millions of people in this group chat have nothing to say about this either.”

Instead, Generation Z said they would prefer a printed response.

“We are human and we have words to use them,” said Kim Lowe, a 25-year-old social worker from Massapequa. - If I took the time to write a thoughtful message, then you should not respond with a smiley. Write something".

Some Reddit users agreed with the decision to remove the emoji and stated that its use in a work environment makes team members "uncompromising" and it appears "unfriendly".

Lifestyle and etiquette expert Elaine Swann, who has received corporate training on the subject, advises avoiding emoji in the professional world, if only to avoid misinterpretation.

“The emoji can be interpreted as disrespect,” Swann said. “Their interpretation differs from generation to generation. Across the board, people want to know they've been heard, and emojis aren't the best way to convey that."

On Reddit, some were less offended by the thumbs-up emoji, but felt that the heart symbol was actually the most inappropriate.

“For me, the heart is for friends and family, it has the more intimate meaning of love, while a thumbs up is just consent,” commented one person. “That’s why I find the heart emoji strange for work messages.”

A survey of 2000 people by Perspectus Global found that most people aged 16 to 29 think you're "officially getting old" if you use thumbs up or heart emojis.

The official list of "canceled" emoji includes:

There have been several studies on emojis, including one that found that including emojis in work emails actually makes you less influential.
