Wyoming bans abortion pills: first such decision in the US

After signing the ban on abortion pills, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon urged lawmakers to move forward and proposed adding a complete ban on abortion to the state constitution and then submitting it to voters for approval.

“I believe that this issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible, and the best way to do this is through a vote of the people,” the Republican governor said.

The passage of the ban comes amid a flurry of activity across the country by anti-abortion groups seeking to achieve a complete ban on abortion after landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2022.

In addition, a decision is nearing in a federal court in Texas, where a judge is expected to rule soon on a possible ban on widely used abortion pills.

Mifepristone tablets were approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over a decade ago and have been legally available for many years.

Texas Judge Matthew Kaczmarik may order abortion pills to be withdrawn from sale across the country.

Texas lawmakers are considering a proposal that would not only ban abortion pills, but also require Internet service providers in the state to block access to websites that sell abortion pills, among other things.

Gordon, the governor of Wyoming, said he would not back down in the fight against abortion.

“I believe that all life is sacred and that every person, including the unborn, should be treated with dignity and compassion,” Gordon wrote in a letter to the Secretary of State.

Ever since the US Supreme Court overturned a 1973 ruling last year that recognized abortion as a constitutional right, anti-abortion activists have been looking for ways to enforce the ban across the country.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research group, about 15 states already restrict access to mifepristone—it can only be purchased with a doctor's approval.
