Frozen spinach recalled in the US due to the threat of listeria

The company Sprouts Farmers Market announced the recall of frozen spinach due to a possible infection with listeria.

The recall concerns frozen sliced ​​leaf spinach in 16 ounces packages, which was manufactured by National Frozen Foods. Listeria was found in some packages of these products, tested by random sampling, writes CNN.

This product was sold in stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

The company urged buyers to throw away the product or return it to the stores to get a refund of the money spent on it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year in the United States about 1600 people become infected with Listeria, about 260 people die from this disease every year. Its symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk of contracting listeria. Pregnant women can transmit bacteria to the developing fetus, which can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth.

“Sprouts Farmers Market has removed all affected products from its retail stores. In addition, Sprouts is conducting an internal investigation with National Frozen Foods to ensure compliance with all food safety standards,” the company said.
