Chocolate factory explodes in Pennsylvania: 6 dead, XNUMX missing

Shortly before 17 p.m., a massive explosion at the RM Palmer Company plant rocked the city of West Reading, according to local authorities.

Nine people were hospitalized for medical care.

A spokesman for the hospital in Reading said that of the eight patients, one was transferred to another department, two are in a satisfactory condition, the rest have been discharged.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but officials have said they believe it may have been the result of a gas leak.

A video posted to social media showed the building exploding violently, sending debris and flames flying into the sky.

Aftermath footage showed parts of the building lying on the street, with the remains continuing to smolder.

“Unfortunately, not much was saved,” said Samantha Kaag, a local firefighter. – In front of the building there is a church and apartments. The explosion was so strong that it moved this building four feet (1,2 m) forward.

No residents were evacuated, but the mayor asked those within one block of the explosion to avoid the area.

Officials said there was no danger to people.

RP Palmer was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in West Reading.

The confectioner, one of the largest in the country, has 850 employees and specializes in holiday treats such as chocolate Easter bunnies.
