According to the Annual Homelessness Assessment Report, about 30% of homeless people in America last year were permanently homeless, while 40% were homeless, meaning they slept in tents, on the streets, or in cars rather than in shelter. In cities, especially in milder climates, the rate of homelessness is higher than in smaller urban and rural areas.
According to the US Conference of Mayors, the number one cause of homelessness in America is the lack of affordable housing. While many associate homelessness with mental health problems or substance abuse, housing costs have been shown to have a stronger correlation with urban homelessness than poverty, substance use, and mental or behavioral disorders.
Homelessness is costly. This is true both for the people facing it and for the organizations fighting it. The lack of affordable housing in urban centers, as well as high rates of inflation, have forced many to leave their homes. Over the past two years, restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic have reduced shelter capacity and access to social assistance programs. Meanwhile, just over 20% of those eligible for housing assistance actually do not receive it due to problems such as long waiting lists and preferential treatment for working families and the elderly.
People of color, people with a history of incarceration, and those who have been associated with the foster care system are more likely to experience homelessness than other groups, although homeless people vary greatly by state and city.
