In New York, increased the legal age of smoking and buying cigarettes

On Tuesday, 16 July, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill to raise the age of buying tobacco and electronic cigarettes in the region.

The legislative act raises the age of smoking from 18 to 21, according to a press release from the politician’s office. The law will take effect in 120 days, writes Fox News.

In a statement, Cuomo condemned "irresponsible corporate marketing campaigns" focused on young people. In his opinion, this contributes to the spread of smoking among children and adolescents.

"By raising the smoking age from 18 to 21, we can prevent cigarettes and e-cigarettes from getting into the hands of young people in the first place, preventing an entire generation of New Yorkers from developing a costly and potentially deadly addiction," Cuomo said.

According to the American Cancer Society, 95% of all smokers begin using tobacco before age 21. Raising the smoking age—a campaign the group calls “Tobacco 21”—has been a top priority for the society's efforts in New York.

“Tobacco 21 is a problem with an obvious solution,” said Julie Hart, senior director of government relations for the American Cancer Association in New York.
