In New Jersey, a bone marrow donor died during surgery: his family are suing doctors

The bride of a high school director in New Jersey, who died earlier this year during a bone marrow donation operation, filed a lawsuit in which he blames negligent doctors for his death.

Bride Derrick Nelson Sheronda Braker described him as a worthy and brave man, he left 5-year-old daughter, writes CNN.

22 July Brecker filed a lawsuit in the Union District Supreme Court for abuse of office.

The accused are anesthetist Jerry Baratta, Hackensack University Medical Center, John Torer Cancer Center and unnamed doctors and nurses who followed Nelson’s treatment. Breaker requires a jury trial and compensation, the amount of which is not specified.

February 18 Nelson underwent a bone marrow donation procedure at the Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey to help a 14-year-old boy suffering from cancer from France, whose name is not indicated.

For months, Nelson has been in touch with Be the Match, a foundation that runs a global bone marrow registry to help those suffering from blood cancer. They eventually informed him that he was a suitable donor for this boy.

Nelson, who was the director of Westfield High School, told the school newspaper before the operation: “If a little pain can give someone years of joy for a short time, then it's worth it.”

According to the Breker lawsuit, the medical team kept Nelson under anesthesia during the operation, despite the low level of oxygen in his body. The complaint alleges that the medical group was unable to provide it with additional oxygen, which led to a slowing of the heart rate of the man. It was a late sign of hypoxemia (low oxygen in the blood).

In the end, realizing that Nelson’s pulse had slowed down, the medical team attempted to provide ventilation through a mask, but was unable to provide an adequate level of care.

The lawsuit states that this led to irreversible damage to Nelson's brain. He fell into a coma and remained on life support until he died in April, he was 44 of the year.

“We don’t want people to worry and refuse to donate bone marrow. The blame lies with the anesthesiologist who did not do what he should have done. This doctor didn’t do his job,” explained Braker’s attorney, David Mazee.

According to the complaint, Nelson was overweight and had sleep apnea (a condition characterized by the cessation of pulmonary ventilation for more than 10 seconds during sleep), two factors that increased his health risks during anesthesia.

The anesthetist Jerry Baratta, who prepared the man for the operation, is properly certified and has been practicing for almost 30 years.

Mary Joe Layton, a spokeswoman for Hackensack Meridian Health, which is part of the Medical Center at Hackensack University, said: "We are saddened by the tragic death of Derrick Nelson and expressed our deepest condolences to his family, students, friends and colleagues."
