Clinical trials of Japanese medicine for COVID-19 started in the USA
Hospitals in Massachusetts began the first US clinical trials of a Japanese drug for the treatment of coronavirus, writes Nbc boston.

Three hospitals in Massachusetts have received permission to conduct the first US clinical trial of a Japanese anti-flu drug that can be used to treat coronavirus infection COVID-19.
Trials of the drug, known as the Avigan brand name drug, will take place at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and the UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Doctors participating in the study say that the drug was widely used in treating people and that side effects are relatively well known.
The drug causes viruses to misread the genetic instructions and not reproduce properly, so the virus ends up "dissolving in vitro," said Dr. Robert Fienberg, an infectious disease specialist at UMass Memorial.

In the United States, between 50 and 60 patients, divided into two groups, will participate in clinical trials. The first group will receive the drug in addition to standard treatment, while the second group will receive only standard therapy.
Japan is currently conducting a similar clinical trial to evaluate the safety of the drug.
The Trump administration is putting pressure on the FDA to approve the drug as a treatment for COVID-19, but there are still concerns about the risks and limited evidence that the drug is effective.
