In Arkansas, a three-year-old girl died in a hot car while her mother was sleeping

A 3-year-old girl from Arkansas has died and her 15-month-old sister is in critical condition after the children were found in a hot car while their mother was sleeping. People.

Laikne Petchenik was pronounced dead in hospital, while her sister is in stable but critical condition.

According to a press release from the Arkansas police, on the afternoon of July 20, the girls' mother, 21-year-old Kayleigh Petchenik, took a nap. When she woke up around 2 pm, she found that her children were missing. The woman called law enforcement officers.

“A Booneville Police officer who responded found the children unconscious on the floor in the rear of the vehicle,” the press release states.

“Lakene Petchenik was later pronounced dead at a Booneville hospital,” the news release said. “Her body was taken to the Arkansas Crime Lab for an autopsy. Her 15-month-old sister remains hospitalized in Little Rock. She is in stable but critical condition."

There are no details about how the Petchenik children got into the car. It is unclear if they entered the car on their own.

Neighbor Matthew Wood explained that Kaylee Petchenik works at night and presumably took a nap during the day.

“She said she locked the doors and when she woke up they were open and the kids were gone,” said Wood, who was present when an officer found the girls unconscious.

“We looked down and saw them in the car, but I froze when I saw them,” Wood recalls of the moment. “The officer opened the door, shouted something to the emergency personnel, grabbed both girls and took them to the hospital.”

It is unclear whether Kaylee Petchenik will be charged.

“Special agents with the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division are investigating and will forward the case to the Logan County Prosecutor's Office for review,” authorities said in a statement.

In 2020, Lakene became the eleventh victim of a hot car in the United States.
